26.06.2006 Outing with Namiki's Friends

Fine Monday morning to have friends from Japan coming to visit. It was more priviledge to show these folks around town.

When my friend, Namiki, told me that his friends were coming from Japan to Malaysia, I have this intention to be a hospitable host. Maybe being "geh poh" is a hobby of mine.

We started off on this fine day to have yam cha with dim sum. Started with a nutritious and chinese-style breakfast would be a head-start for the day's busy schedule. Unfortunately, one friend, Watanabe-san, was feeling ill due to the day before's late night excessive drinking. Poor man! I hope he did recover after a full tiring trip to the north of Selangor.

For foreigners, I would normally bring them to the pewter factory. The interesting part is it is a uniqueness of Malaysia, secondly at least more interesting hands-on activity to be tried out, like hammering, polishing and so forth. We participated in a workshop, known as "The School of Hard Knocks" (Please call +603-41456350 in advance to book a place. RM 50 per pax; opens everyday). After all the "hard knocking" for an hour, we could bring our prized amateur-work-of-art home. The trip to the museum and factory served to be an eye-opener and of course lots of fun.

Lunch was at Petronas Club's western restaurant (Dulang Suite), located on the 42nd floor of Petronas Twin Tower 2. The club is open to MEMBERS ONLY. So, we were fortunate to dine there. Overlooking the KL skyline, I realised KL has expanded more than I have in mind. Too bad it was lunch, or else, the scenery would have been beautiful if it were to be in the evening. During our brief course there, Dr. Rais (some government official) and his associates walked in and dined there too. I felt so priviledged! All of a sudden, I realised that how a man in an ivory tower feels like to be on the top, overlooking the ant-like humans and cute miniature cars below. So reachable...

The whole evening, I drove up north to Sekinchan to visit a 4-acre Longan Farm, which En. Sharif and his family operates. The brown-skin-white-flesh fruit captured the attention of my dear friends, with its sweetness and its petiteness like a golf-ball-but-only-a-size-smaller. Chinese calls this fruit as the "Dragon Eye". Delicious indeed! What most surprising to know that these Japanese love the King of Fruit - Durian!

Padi fields that surround this Longan farm had its crops harvested, leaving only the stems at their original place. It would have been beautiful to see these crops to sway with the wind.

Coming to Kuala Selangor, one cannot forego seafood at its fame Pasir Parembang fishing village. Seafood galore dominated the dinner palate of my guests. Two kilos of crabs, prawns, asparagus, tofu, steam bread (mantou), and sweet coconut to savour with.

After a fulfilling dinner, we proceeded to catch a glimpse of the well-known fireflies in Kuala Selangor. This time round, we went to Bukit Belimbing (motorised boat) instead of Kampung Kuantan (manually rowed boat) which I used to frequent. To my astonishment, this place has a better view of the fireflies, not to mention its species, compared to its human-manned-boat counterpart. With new moon in place, and shinning stars glittering in a dark dark night, the dim light emited from the back of the fireflies on the Parembang trees looks facinating indeed. These tiny creatures could be seen dancing gracefully around the trees to woo its female partners. Watanabe-san even commented that it's a good place for a romatic rendezvous for couple! Breathtaking beautiful!

Darkness creeped in, and it was time to bid farewell to our short journey around town. Though a tired night, I did enjoyed myself very much. I hope Namiki and his friends felt the same.

Meeting a new friend - Aso Yutaka

Father's Day on 18 June 2006. A lovely day to spread the joy with father around-the-world.

That Sunday night was also football night for the Japanese (World Cup qualifying round; Japanese vs Croatia; result: 0-0).

I had gladly to receive a dinner invitation (actually it was me who had asked in the first place, oops!) at a Thai Restaurant in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar. Sasaki-san has intended to introduce his tennis mate, Aso-san, to me. I am pleased that he did.

This new friend, Aso-san, is a lecturer in University Malaya, attached to the Japanese language faculty. From this brief meeting with a new friend, my impression of him is: an avid tennis player, an intellect, a humourous person, and of course, look somewhat alike Yamaguchi-san (Kate's friend).

A friend in need, is a friend indeed. Aso-san, yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

I did enjoyed the company for the night very much. Great laughs, new knowledge exchanged, rekinder friendship and of course new acquaintance made. All these thanks to Sasaki-san. Arigatou gozaimashita.

Full Course Japanese Dinner - Osusume

I have invited Sasaki-san to a dinner on 15 June 2006. I love to ask him for dinner as I enjoyed looking at this person enjoying his food and of course his beer.

After settled for Japanese, we head straight to a Japanese restaurant in town, just next to Westin Hotel.

Wow! What a sumptious meal! Sasaki-san had ordered the Osusume set meal. Osusume means "introduced or specially prepared". When it comes to Osusume, what I have learnt, is that you have to know these few facts: (1) at least your pocket is filled with cash/ credit card; (2) the food is fresher as it is introduced by the chef; (3) full course meal, at least of 7 different kind petite but filling meal; (4) good sake to go with the meal; (5) you need good company that share the passion of appreciate and savour Japanese delicacies.

We ordered a 7 course meal; and sake to go with it. Ah, I felt I was the luckiest girl in the whole wide world! So fortunate and happy. It felt so good and I did not wish to end it so soon.

Delicious indeed. Thank you for the lovely dinner!

World Cup Fever 9 June - 9 July

A month-long World Cup Fever is on! This time, it is held in Germany.

I bet football is definitely one of the most talked-about language of the world beside music. Everyone shares the passion of football, like in its Coca-Cola advertisement: makan bola, tidur, minum Coca-Cola! Every corner of the world, you will see nothing else except football.

According the research done for the past World Cup, the productivity of its people are slacking during these fever season of football. Everyone will stay up in the middle of the night just to know the exciting game's result; and of course the betting and winning of each match played. I guess, it's high gain (more analysis and intense watching) high return (betting money).

I am not that into football, except started to watch it in 2002 when it was held in Japan-Korea, which share the same time zone as I do. Fun to watch, exciting when the tiny ball was kicked into the goal post, fuzing with the roar of "GOAL!" from the crowd and commentators! The drowning of your own voice is the only highlights of the big game if you are really part of the game!

Everyone, putting aside their differences in nationalities, races, colours, language; all get into the mood the FIFA spirit: shouting the slogan supporting the groups, colour national flags onto face, interesting and body-revealing costumes!

That's the magic that football brings. Unbelievable!

My fond memories

Yesterday, while I was searching through my old stuff from the faded carton boxes, I found booklets (we used to call Autographs when we were younger) that contains my friends' handwriting during my primary school years. Ah~ what a long time. I just felt like it was only yesterday.

Looking through the nice encouraging words that my friends had left me; those cute handwritings that reminds me of my younger days; reminds me of the friendship that we have had cherished, some continued, some just died off; and of course the silly little love-and-hate things we have stated at that moment in time. All those little insignificant nostalgic moments.

It surely reminds me of the friends I have made. Some I don't even remember how they looked like; or even when we have met. My brother laughed at me, saying that I choose quantity instead of quality when it comes to making friends. I can only nod with agreement.

It's time to rekinder my friendship with these people who took the time to write in my humble booklet of rememberance captured in time.

BookFest @ Malaysia

First and ever BookFest @ Malaysia is here from 27 May to 4 June at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.

I guess it means my pocket will be burnt a hole, a big one, real soon.

My brother went there to preview the place during his first visit. He told me that the place was really filled with lots of publishers, and I would be delighted to shop till I dropped. I shared the same thought too.

Yesterday, I had to go with my brother to get my 3-in-1 special package, which was forgotten by my younger sibling the other day (instead, he bought be Rich Dad, Poor Dad). My brother decided to come along as the day before I told him that from evening, the entrance fee is waived (entrance fee for the bookfest is RM 2, except children and school-going students below 18).

When I got in, it was really huge as descriped by my brother. I am more delighted to find out that I was just happy and confused to be there the same time; happy, because spoilt for choices, confused, because I did not know where to start and the place was crowded (even after 8pm).

At the check-out till, I paid up my share of the books I am interested. It's around RM 450 (my portion), just within that short period of two hours!

Looks like have to do more reading for self-improvement and to make my money worth!

Happy reading, everyone!

Sushi Dinner - Nori-Maki

Two handsome gentlemen to have dinner with...my pleasure

I love sushi. But a home-made one is my very first time. All these, thanks to my dear friend, Sasaki for being a wonderful host and made it happened on 27th May night. I am so grateful to his kindness and hospitality.

Frankly speaking, the portion both of them have prepared can really stuff an elephant (too much exageration, I think, hahaha). Speaking of which, we have nori (dried seasweed), sushi rice, nato (a kind of sticky soy bean), spring onions for garnishing, sashimi including the costly uni (urchin), abalone, ika (squid), amaebi (shrimp), suzuki (seabass) and maguro (tuna). The mixture of the ingredients bought by Sasaki, I must say, sumptious and delicious!

Sumptious and delicious sushi dinner at the cosiness in a home

When he told me the price, I was so embarrassed. (sorry, my friend, to have cost you a bomb for the simple dinner). However I appreciate the attention and the wonderful dinner that night. Thank you once again!

Though a wonderful dinner, but my dear host was not at his top form. I think he was quite worn-out due to his tennis matches (full day!) I hope he is well and healthy. Do get some rest and gokurosama deshita.

This very night, I have the pleasure to share some insights with new-kid-on-the-block, Kei (he is the same guy who did the first round of Okonomiyaki dinner last time). Glad to have him back in town. To let you know, don't play-play with this high achiever, as he is not only dedicated in his work, but other aspects too, like drinking. No wonder Japanese are known to be strong drinker!

I did have an enjoyable night with these two wonderful people.
